What are passwords, identities, and groups?

[Home]

Passwords, identities, and groups are items you create to store your data in your Vault file.

What is a password?

Password iconA password stores login information for a website, account, or Windows application. Passwords can contain the following types of information:

Username and password

Email address

URL (website address)

Security questions and answers

Free-form text or notes

Custom name/value fields

File attachments

Typically, you will create a password for each website, account, and application you have a login for. You can also use passwords to store any other type of information you need to keep safe, such as software product keys or order confirmation numbers.

For more information about creating passwords,, see Create or edit a password.

What is an identity?

Identity iconAn identity stores information that you frequently provide to websites on checkout pages, registration pages, and other types of web forms. Identities can contain the following types of information:

Name

Company details

Telephone numbers

Email addresses

Postal addresses

Credit card numbers

Free-form text or notes

Custom name/value fields

Many users will only need a single identity, but sometimes multiple identities are desired. An example is if you want to keep separate information for home and business use.

For more information about creating identities, see Create or edit an identity.

What is a group?

Group iconA group is used to organize similar passwords and identities together. For example, you could create a group for your online shopping accounts, one for your work passwords, and another for your utility online accounts.
